The government must inform the public about the details of the measures

Statement by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Stefanos Stefanou on the measures announced by the government

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 24 March 2020, Nicosia

The cooperation of all is imperative for the new measures announced by the government to be effective. We call on our fellow citizens to implement the measures and everyone, as one, with our stand to all contribute towards combating the spread of the virus.

We stress the need for the government to ensure that citizens and professionals are briefed about the specific details of the measures that are being put forth. Many people are already contacting AKEL seeking answers and clarifications to questions that only the government can provide.

Measures for the Health sector

Citizens’ cooperation in the collective effort to confront the pandemic is extremely important. But that is not the only factor. There are other factors that will determine the outcome of the effort. This is where the health sector, and more specifically the public health sector, which has undertaken the main burden of responsibility, stands out.

It is imperative that the government support public hospitals more determinedly. They face many problems because of the pressure they are under, but also because of the downgrading they have suffered in staffing, equipment and infrastructures in recent years.

The government must:

  1. With more determination and speed support the public hospitals. Our view is that they must be put under the full management of the Ministry of Health.
  2. The government must swiftly ensure the incorporation and utilization of private hospitals and general practitioners in the overall plan to confront the pandemic. A long delay has already been noted.
  3. It must safeguard that all health workers have the necessary supplies, equipment and dispensable so that they can carry out their duties in safety.

Measures for working people and the economy

We are waiting to see the government’s package of measures on the economy, working people and society. AKEL reiterates that these measures must substantially support working people’s income, including the self-employed too, provide support to households and businesses and protect citizens. AKEL has submitted concrete proposals for the achievement of these goals.

Concerning the banks

AKEL also stresses the need for the government to exert pressure on the banks to implement the framework and recommendations put forth by the Central Bank. The banks must freeze loans and lengthen the time they have announced for foreclosures.

The banks were supported by citizens and the state to prevent them from collapsing. Now it is their turn to support the economy and citizens. Their vague positions and their silence so far justifiably creates concern among the people.
