The government has shown inaction on the second wave of the pandemic
Statement by Giannakis Gabriel AKEL Member of Parliament on the Famagusta Hospital
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 6th November 2020, Nicosia
The government of Nikos Anastasiades-DISY had six months ahead of it to prepare a comprehensive operational plan to confront the pandemic.
The Anastasiades-DISY government had a duty to staff state hospitals with medical and paramedical staff and invest substantially in the health system so that the state could cope with the second wave of the pandemic that experts were warning about.
Instead, we have been informed that the surgical clinic of the Famagusta General Hospital has been closed to the public and will now be used exclusively for patients with Covid-19, signaling with this move the final closure of the Famagusta Hospital.
The government ruling forces must at long last realize that in the free areas of Famagusta there is no other medical centre that can serve the patients of the province, with the result that the cases are transferred to Larnaca and Nicosia for treatment and hospitalization.
We recognize the seriousness of the situation caused by the pandemic, but we hope not to mourn the victims of other diseases or emergencies as a result of the government’s inaction.
