The government doesn’t know what it is doing in the critical sector of energy

When it comes to the most crucial projects concerning Cyprus’ energy security, the government has proven that it has neither answers, nor solutions.
Regarding the arrival of natural gas for electricity generation —which is the only way to substantially reduce the cost of electricity — not only have the government’s announcements regarding the various timetables it itself has set not been met, but the facts demonstrate that we are heading for even greater delays, if not a dead end. The President’s statements that he is waiting for a study on the infrastructure in Vasilikos contradict his Minister responsible for the Plan B, that he claimed to have, and point to further delays. We are also experiencing significant delays on the critical issue of modernizing the Dhekelia plant.
No progress has been recorded on the electrical interconnection for months. The project is getting bogged down in stagnation, with costs skyrocketing. The Minister of Finance warns about the economic aspect of the project, in contrast to the Minister of Energy, who appears to be its champion. No one knows what the government’s position ultimately is.
These developments trap consumers in exorbitantly expensive electricity, the country in energy insecurity, and multiply the risk of widespread blackouts breaking out.
Society does not want any more excuses and evasions. What it demands is security and affordable prices. It demands that the government at long last assumes responsibility and not simply limit itself to denouncing the Anastasiades-DISY government for the poor state of the energy sector, which admittedly bears enormous responsibility.
After all, Mr. Christodoulides should not forget that he himself was a leading member of the Anastasiades-DISY government.
