The General Secretary of the C.C. of AKEL Stefanos Stefanou met with the Syrian Chargé d’Affaires General in Cyprus

The General Secretary of the Central Committee of AKEL, Stefanos Stefanou, met today with the Syrian Chargé d’Affaires General in Cyprus Dr. Ammar Awad. The General Secretary of AKEL was accompanied by Vera Polycarpou, Head of International Relations and European Policy of the C.C. of AKEL.

During the meeting, an exchange of views took place on the humanitarian disaster in the Gaza Strip, and concern was expressed about the potential impact on the entire region of the Middle East and Eastern Mediterranean in the event of a generalisation of the conflict breaking out.

The General Secretary of AKEL denounced the missile and other attacks by Israel and the US against Syria which add to the suffering of the Syrian people and aggravate the already explosive situation in the region. Stefanos Stefanou expressed solidarity with the Syrian people who are also subject to the economic sanctions of the West. He stressed the urgent need to put an end to the foreign interventions in our region and to find solutions through diplomatic channels. S.Stefanou stressed that the peoples of our turbulent region, including the Cypriot people too, have the right to peace and progress in accordance with the Resolutions of the UN and international law.

The General Secretary of AKEL Stefanos Stefanou stressed that an immediate ceasefire in Gaza is imperative to stop the bloodshed and humanitarian disaster, and to lead the Palestinian problem towards a solution through the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.
