The General Secretary of AKEL met with the new Ambassador of the People’s  Republic of China

The General Secretary of AKEL, Stefanos Stefanou, met yesterday with the new Chinese Ambassador, Yang Yundong, whom he welcomed to Cyprus. The General Secretary of AKEL was accompanied by Vera Polycarpou, Head of International Relations and European Policy of AKEL.

Stefanos Stefanou briefed the Chinese diplomat on the current situation surrounding the Cyprus problem and the consultations led by the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy, aiming at creating the conditions for the resumption of the negotiations from where they left off in 2017, with the goal of achieving the solution of Bi-zonal, Bi-communal Federation with political equality, based on the resolutions of the UN. Within this framework, he expressed AKRL’s gratitude for the supportive and positive role China is playing as a permanent member of the Security Council of the UN

During the meeting, satisfaction was expressed with the level of bilateral relations between Cyprus and China, as well as the conviction as regards the potential for further development in all areas of mutual interest.

The General Secretary of AKEL stressed the importance AKEL attaches to developing its relations with the Communist Party of China, which are based on mutual respect and the pursuit of a world of cooperation and peace.
