The findings regarding “Mafia State” confirm the network of vested interests established by the Anastasiades-DISY government

The Anti-Corruption Authority’s findings regarding the book “Mafia State” by Nikos Anastasiades’ former assistant, Makarios Drousiotis, confirm what everyone in Cyprus already knows about the Anastasiades-DISY administration. The system of vested interests established by the DISY government and Nikos Anastasiades indulged in a gigantic feast on the Cypriot people’s backs, humiliated the state and its institutions, and brought shame upon the country internationally.
– Regardless of the investigation in question and any possible criminal offenses, the blatant and scandalous conflicts of interest involving Nicos Anastasiades and his Ministers in the “golden passport” industry which they set up—in a series of other cases too—was evident from the very outset and remains self-evident.
– The criminal offenses attributed by the Anti-Corruption Authority to Nikos Anastasiades, his law firm and partners, as well as other individuals in his inner circle such as Rikkos Erotokritou, are extremely serious and shameful for a President of the country: abuse of power, trading in influence, money laundering, and conspiracy. Criminal prosecution must proceed against all those involved, after first ensuring that the Attorney General and the Deputy Attorney General—who have an obvious conflict of interest—will not be able to influence the course of the prosecution. The accused must be brought to justice and the guilty must be put in prison. Impunity cannot continue any longer.
The political life and state of affairs installed by Mr.Anastasiades are a shame on the country, and the fact that DISY insists on defending him and boasting about him insults the intelligence and dignity of citizens. We expect the DISY leadership, as well as President Nicos Christodoulides, to take a stand—even at this late stage. At the same time, AKEL stresses that the system of vested interests established by Nicos Anastasiades did not end with his departure from the President’s office. Dismantling this system is a universal demand of society and constitutes the minimal duty towards the dignity of the people and the country.
