The confusion in Education increases insecurity and uncertainty

Statement by AKEL C.C. Press Spokesperson Stefanos Stefanou

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 7th May 2020, Nicosia

Following yesterday’s decisions taken by the government on schools, the chaos in the sensitive area of education, which was caused by its erroneous and contradictory handlings from the very beginning of the pandemic, has increased.

  • Members of the scientific team advising the government state that what was finally decided was not included in the Roadmap and that they were taken by surprise by the decisions.
  • Educational organizations state that what was decided yesterday at the Presidential Palace has absolutely nothing to do with what the Minister of Education was telling them all the previous period.
  • The government on some issues says that it follows the instructions of the scientific team, on some other matters it says that it is the one that decides and that it is its responsibility. People are wondering on the basis of what facts and considerations is the government following one or the other approach.

The point is that the chaos and confusion have led to growing insecurity and uncertainty felt by citizens during the pandemic. And this is the worst development, at a time when efforts are being made to gradually lift the restrictions that we all support.

We are not the ones going to say whether schools should be opened or not. This is up to the scientists on this issue. However, from the moment the decisions were taken by the government, it is the one that must ensure that the first priority should be that all the necessary measures are taken for the formulation of strict protocols and procedures to protect the health of children, teachers and their families.
