The Central Committee of AKEL has begun the debate on changes to the Party statutes

Sunday 15 October 2023, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

The Central Committee of AKEL today began discussing on the changes to Party statutes and rules it will propose to Party members ahead of the Statutory Congress next November. The aim is to make AKEL more participatory and open to its militants and members, more efficient and flexible in its daily activities, with even more lively, modern and democratic procedures.

These changes have to do with the structures, operation and procedures of the Party and concern issues such as the composition of the Central Committee, the procedure for electing the General Secretary, the procedure for selecting a candidate for the Presidency of the Republic, the term-limit for MP’s, the incompatibility of specific Party positions with public office/posts, changes in the Party organisational structure on a district and regional level and even more transparency and control over the Party’s finances on the basis of the recommendations of the Audit Service.

The debate will continue next Wednesday, October 18, 2023.

The proposed changes will subsequently be the subject of a free and democratic debate which will take place in the coming weeks among the thousands of Party members who will f course be able to submit their own proposals. The outcome of this dialogue will be put before a new session of the Central Committee of the Party and the final decisions will be taken by the forthcoming AKEL Statutory Congress this November.
