The candidacy of Mavroyiannis is independent, non-partisan and widely accepted

The choice of Andreas Mavroyiannis is an independent, non-partisan and widely accepted candidacy and has no relation to the ruling Democratic Rally DISY party, stressed the Parliamentary Representative of AKEL Giorgos Loukaides.

G.Loukaides, speaking to ‘Astra’ radio, pointed out that Andreas Mavroyiannis has never been in any party, adding that it is a candidacy that can appeal to society. He expressed confidence that parties and personalities will soon express their support to the choice of Andreas Mavroyiannis.

Giorgos Loucaides said that the recommendation of the Central Committee of AKEL for support to the Mavroyiannis candidacy will be put before the Party Base Groups. The views of the party membership will be recorded by secret ballot and after the Central Committee has taken stock of the opinions expressed, an extraordinary Pancyprian Congress will convene on 5 June, when the final decision will be taken.

The AKEL Parliamentary Representative said party members will be asked whether or not the Central Committee’s proposal to select Mavroyiannis is approved. G.Loukaides underlined that despite the difficulties, there is the prospect of victory and ridding ourselves of the Anastasiades and DISY government. Furthermore, he noted that if Mavroyiannis had no prospect of succeeding, some people would not be so bothered and would not be attacking him.
