The Anti-fascist Victory reminds us that no one is invincible when confronted with the power of the peoples

AKEL salutes the anniversary of the Anti-Fascist Victory of the Peoples which ended the Second World War. The victory against Hitler-Fascism is of universal historical significance because had the axis powers prevailed this would have meant the return of humanity to the age of barbarism and an endless massacre of the world in holocausts and concentration camps. We honor the sacrifice of the millions of the fallen. We salute the veteran fighters in Cyprus and all over the world who wrote history on the battlefields. For AKEL the decision of the C.C. of AKEL on 16th June 1943, with which hundreds of its members enlisted voluntarily in the army and fought fascism, is a badge of honour.
The Anti-fascist Victory of the Peoples belongs to all the forces that fought German Nazism, however the main burden with tens of millions of dead and injured fell to the Soviet Union. The Battle of Stalingrad turned the tide of the war and the unfurling of the Red flag over the Reichstag signaled the crushing defeat of Hitler-Fascism. This historical truth can’t be erased, despite all the efforts the hacks of modern anti-communism may make.
AKEL stresses that the struggle for peace and friendship among the peoples has never been timelier. The intensification of the energy and geopolitical confrontations in the world, the new escalation in the US-NATO imperialist aggression in the Middle East, the proliferation of nuclear weapons and the continuing militarization of the EU are signs of the times which demonstrate that the danger of a new generalized war breaking out is returning. AKEL points out the need for practical resistance to fascism and especially to those forces who today yearn for a return to Nazism and fascism. The peoples and their struggles can prevent the scenario of a war breaking out, the danger of fascism, and above all, eradicate the causes that give rise to wars and fascism. The Anti-Fascist Victory of the Peoples will always represent a reminder that that no one is invincible when confronted with the power of the peoples
The Central Committee of AKEL, honoring the anniversary of the Anti-Fascist Victory of the Peoples, is organising a symbolic event on 9th May at the Monument of the Fallen Fighters of World War II (next to the PASYDY building) in Nicosia. The event will take place at 11:00 a.m. with the General Secretary of the Central Committee of AKEL Andros Kyprianou as the keynote speaker.
