The Anastasiades Government is undermining the implementation of the General Health Scheme

Statement by Parliamentary Representative of AKEL-Left-New Forces Yiorgos Loukaides

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 28th August 2017, Nicosia

The figures released by the European Statistical Office “EUROSTAT”, which show public spending for health three times less than the average across the EU (2.7% -7.2%), reconfirm three facts.

Firstly, as a country, we remain at the bottom of the table across the EU in relation to public spending on health as a result of the drastic reduction of the relevant funds imposed in recent years by the Anastasiades government.

Secondly, despite the government’s pledges to the contrary, the public health sector continues to be in a critical state to the detriment of patients.

Thirdly, the government’s stand is still undermining the effort for the implementation of the General Health Scheme, given that it is a common admission that without the substantial support and upgrading of the public health sector the much needed reform will be merely theoretical
