The Anastasiades-DISY government acts according to a plan and its basic goal of downgrading and damaging public education

Statement by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Stefanos Stefanou

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 19 July 2018, Nicosia

The Anastasiades-DISY government is continuing insistently on the dangerous path of arrogance and authoritarianism instead of giving space to conducting a dialogue and consultation. The decision by the Ministry of Education to transfer teachers who are leading members of POED (trade union for primary school teachers) is another example of the arrogance and authoritarian shown by the government and ruling forces.

In the beginning, the government refused to discuss with teachers before taking decisions that concern them.

The government subsequently recruited the Archbishop in an attempt to defame and denigrate teachers and their work.

Now they have begun to transfer in a revengeful way teachers who are trade union activists.

The latest developments, the intervention of the Employer’s Association OEB, which follows the line of the government against teachers, brings back its well-known positions to abolish the right to strike.

It is now clear that the Anastasiades-DISY government is taking action according to a plan and its basic goal of downgrading and damaging public education. This is the reason why it hasn’t engaged in a dialogue and is now blocking it and, at the same time, proceeding to the imposition of its anti-educative and anti-worker policies.
