The General Secretary of AKEL Stefanos Stefanou sent a message from London for the rallying of the Left and progressive forces of Cyprus ahead of the parliamentary elections. The General Secretary of AKEL was the keynote speaker at a political meeting organised by the AKEL Branch in Britain held on Thursday at the Cypriot Community Centre in London, where he heads a delegation from the Party for meetings and contacts.

Stefanos Stefanou spoke of his joy and satisfaction every time he is among the people of the community and, at the same time, praised the activities of the Cypriot community, particularly in the struggle for the reunification of Cyprus and the rapprochement between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots.

Furthermore, S. Stefanou referred to the dramatic international developments, emphasizing that the Left is resisting imperialism, genocide, wars, and the increasing violation of international law. He added that the attempt to erase international law is particularly worrying and dangerous for small and struggling peoples, such as the Cypriot people. Cyprus invests its struggle to end the Turkish occupation and reunite our country and people in international law, he pointed out.

The General Secretary of AKEL went on to speak about the socio-economic situation in Cyprus, which is stifling the future and dreams of young people, making a particular reference to the housing crisis and growing social inequalities.

Referring to the parliamentary elections to be held in May, Stefanos Stefanou spoke about the importance and role of the Social Alliance as a platform for progressive people and forces that stand together with AKEL and the Left. “It is imperative that we keep AKEL strong, make it even stronger, because only a strong AKEL can secure the present and future of our country and people,” he declared from the podium of the meeting.

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Communist Party of Cyprus-AKEL, the General Secretary of AKEL honored, in an emotional atmosphere, the veteran AKEL members who have completed 50 years of uninterrupted party membership and struggles in the Party ranks with the Party’s Medal.
