Stefanos Stefanou replies to Government Spokesperson on Cyprus-Greece relations and economy
Statement by Stefanos Stefanou, member of the Political Bureau of AKEL
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 16th March 2015, Nicosia
On the relations between Cyprus-Greece
It is the statements of the Finance Minister and not of Andros Kyprianou that are causing problems. That is why the Deputy Government Spokesman should address him.
It was Finance Minister Haris Georgiades who stated that “I did not understand what Greece was demanding at the Eurogroup meeting” and that “there are cultural links between Greece and Cyprus, but that’s all.” So much for all the supposed support!
The Cyprus government’s submissive stand towards Troika is a far cry from the assertive stance of the Greek government. After the electoral victory of SYRIZA, Greece as far as the Government and ruling circles are concerned, from a “mother country” has been transformed into a distant relative.
On the destruction of the Cyprus economy
It is understandable why the government cannot admit that it is the bankers and their erroneous supervision that destroyed the Cyprus economy, as the former head of the Troika to Cyprus Maarten Verveik himself reiterated just a few days ago.
If they do admit this, how would they justify their positions that “Cyprus has the best bankers in the world”? How would they justify the full and at all levels support they provided to the former Governor of the Central Bank Governor Athanasios Orphanides?
The bankers destroyed the economy with their criminal mistakes and the current government offered them full protection
