Statements by the General Secretary of AKEL A.Kyprianou on submitting candidacies for the Parliamentary Elections
12th May 2021, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia
“We are submitting our candidacies today as AKEL (Progressive Party of the Working People). I want to express our regret because the Government and the Legal Service, in abolishing a prehistory over thirty years, sixteen election campaigns and countless participations in international fora, they have imposed this development on us. The Administrative Court ruled that it had no jurisdiction to hear our appeal and that the Electoral Court has the jurisdiction to do so. AKEL will assert all its legal rights until the very end with all that entails.
We have presented a worthy ballot before the Cypriot people consisting of people who are prominent, experienced and young candidates, knowledgeable and competent from the entire spectrum of modern society, an honest and dedicated ballot to defend the common good.
Developments in our country in recent years have been negative. Cypriot society feels that its hope for a solution of the Cyprus problem is being stolen little by little, for a way out of the deadlocks which the economic crisis, the pandemic and the anti-social government policies have created.
People are looking for hope and a perspective for a better life.
AKEL completes 95 years of life and struggle. All these years have been full of struggles and actions for the people. With mistakes, weaknesses and omissions – but always with honesty, honor and consistency to meet the Cypriot people’s aspirations.
We look every Cypriot straight in the eye and ask for his/her support. We ask the people to give us the strength to become its strength, to become the voice that asserts his rights and entitlements.
AKEL was, is and will remain a serious, consistent and steadfast force in the struggle for the reunification of our country.
A force for working people, small and medium-sized businesses, pensioners, the underprivileged, youth, for growth and prosperity.
A force to support public health, public education, for the protection of the environment and for cultural development.
Together, we have achieved a lot for Cyprus, for our people, the people of labour and for the welfare state.
We will continue together after May 30 too. With a strong AKEL, so that there is a powerful voice in Parliament for the many, so that we can wage the battle for progressive change, to build together the Cyprus that our young people deserve. The Cyprus we deserve.”
