Statements by the General Secretary of AKEL A.Kyprianou, during the mobilization on the Legal Service’s decision not to prosecute police officers on the serial killer case’s victims

16th June 2021, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

I am not a lawyer, nor am I interested in the legal aspect of the issue. It annoys me that my country does not have legislative procedures and frameworks in place to protect women and thus they are left to fall victim to the irresponsibility of anyone.

This must not be allowed to pass. I believe that the state had a responsibility to protect these women and to punish in an exemplary way those responsible, starting with the political chief and going right down to the grass roots. The state had a responsibility to protect these women. Therefore those who are knowledgeable of legal matters must ensure that the same thing is not going to happen again and tell us that there are no legal proceedings to prosecute those who are responsible for these things.

This is totally unacceptable. Seven women have been murdered. Numerous people had appealed to the police issuing warnings, but no one showed an interest and then they say that we cannot prosecute them. To have such gaps in legislation, if indeed there are, is an insult to 21st century Cyprus.
