Statements by the General Secretary of AKEL A.Kyprianou after the meeting with a delegation of the Cyprus Employers & Industrialists Federation (OEB)

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 30th March 2021, Nicosia

“First, let me publicly congratulate the President, the new President and the new Board of Directors of OEB.

We had a constructive discussion regardless of the different approaches we may have so many issues.

We consider that a dialogue between us is very useful both with regards the development of the economy itself, but also primarily for the support that should be provided to working people which I consider to be the driving force of businesses.

We have exchanged views on important issues concerning the Cyprus economy and I’ll say that I consider that the reshaping of Cyprus economy’s developmental model is a common priority, a goal which in AKEL’s view must be set as a priority.

Discussions have already begun between the government and the political parties towards this end. We believe that emphasis should be placed on new productive sectors and sectors such as the primary and secondary sectors, but also in areas such as digital technology, innovation, technology in general, green development issues.

We have discussed all these issues and we have agreed that we will repeat our meeting to have a more specialized discussion on issues related to the economy.

I would like to thank the President of OEB for the productive discussion we had, I repeat, regardless of the disagreements we have between us. Dialogue is always useful and can contribute towards the correct direction.”
