Statement by the General Secretary of the C.C. of AKEL A.Kyprianou on the visit of the Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation Sergei Lavrov

The visit of the Russian Foreign Minister is very important and honors in the best way the completion of 60 years of diplomatic relations between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Cyprus.
On the occasion of the visit of the Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation, the principled positions upheld by the Russian Federation with regards the Cyprus problem were reaffirmed. Positions that support the struggle of the Cypriot people for a solution and reunification. Russia’s support towards other sectors, such as the economy, has also been reaffirmed. We thank the Russian Foreign Minister and through him the Russian Federation for its timeless and consistent support towards Cyprus.
We call on the Anastasiades Government to change course and pursue with consistency a multidimensional foreign policy based on principles and sincere cooperation with those who support us in the international community. It must realise that it cannot pin all its hopes on one side, and in doing so putting in danger our traditionally friendly relations with Russia and other countries important for Cyprus’ cause, in order to satisfy the demands of the US.
