Statement by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Stefanos Stefanou on the real number of “golden” passports

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 2nd November 2020, Nicosia

Not a day goes by that a new aspect of the scandal with the “golden” passports set up by the Anastasiades-DISY government is not revealed.

Today it has been revealed that the government tried to deceive the European Commission about the true number of citizenships granted made under the “golden” passport program.

The government recorded only the citizenships of investors and not the members of their families, to whom citizenship was automatically granted.

To understand how substantial the difference is, one can simply consider the example of the well-known Saudi tycoon who donated his jet for the family holidays of the President. Only 6 people were investors in that investment, nevertheless another 36 people received the Cypriot citizenship, children, women, second wives and in-laws.

The government must take a position on the issue and stop hiding. In any case, the government must make public the total number of citizenships it has approved for both investors and their relatives.
