Society is not asking for charity; it demands action

When Nikos Christodoulides’ government claims that the public is now paying the price for the failed policies of the AKEL administration, it is clear that – through sweeping generalisations – it is seeking excuses to conceal its inability to take measures to support society in the face of rising costs.
Society is not asking for charity and will certainly not tolerate the government pointing the finger at it simply because it has been brought to its knees by rising prices. Society demands action, right now. At a time when prices are soaring, at a time when European Union countries are taking measures to offer support and control prices and are cutting taxes, whilst in Cyprus the public coffers are filling up with revenues due to the cost of living, the government’s excuses and delays only succeed in infuriating the public and making the situation even more harsh for society.
AKEL – unlike the government – does not merely make observations. Yesterday, it submitted a comprehensive memorandum to the Ministry of Finance containing specific, costed and feasible proposals to provide immediate support to society, including:
- a transport allowance for low- and middle-income households with children,
- targeted one-off heating support ahead of winter, and
- a 50 per cent reduction in road tax for 2027 for the poorest households.
The following are also demanded: an end to double taxation on fuel, scrutiny and transparency regarding fuel prices and, in relation to electricity: a permanent 5 per cent VAT rate and the extension of social pricelists. There is also an urgent need for an energy-efficiency upgrade scheme for older homes and housing policy measures to tackle rises in interest rates and rents.
None of the above would not endanger public finances, as they would cost less than the additional tax revenue the State has already collected due to the cost of living.
The only thing in danger – if Nikos Christodoulides’ government continues to do nothing – is the livelihood and dignity of society.
