Seriousness and fulfillment of plans is demanded on energy issue

Statement of Stavros Evagorou, member of Political Bureau of AKEL

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 5th September 2015, Nicosia

econ EEZ cyprusAfter the discovery of vast natural gas deposits in the Egyptian Exclusive Economic Zone, the government of the Republic of Cyprus concluded that Cyprus’ geostrategic and energy role in the region is at the same time also being upgraded.

As AKEL, we consider that a country’s geostrategic and energy role is not upgraded automatically because of the finding of hydrocarbons in a neighbouring country, despite the fact that each new discovery in the region constitutes a positive development. However, for Cyprus not to lag behind in the on-going developments what is principally required is seriousness and commitment towards the fulfilment of our energy plans.

When no planning is being implemented, when research activities have been suspended, when the structures that had been created for the exploitation of our wealth energy have been dismantled, then let someone from the government explain how Cyprus’ geostrategic role in the region, but also internationally, is being upgraded.
