Popular Social Solidarity Network

 

 

During the last years in Cyprus several factors and institutions of the society such as the Church, the Red Cross and entrepreneurs have established several funds and networks of social assistance for people facing the most negative consequences of the capitalist crisis. AKEL has decided apart from providing its Political Proposal regarding an exit from the Memorandum with the Troika and being in the front of the struggle of the working class, to establish a solidarity mechanism for the social strata in need for socio-economic assistance.

Thus, AKEL’s Nicosia-Kyrenia District Committee and mass organizations of the progressive Popular Movement such as PEO (trade union), EDON (youth organization), POGO (women’s organization) have established  the Popular Social Solidarity Network that aims to the aid provision and active support to people facing grave socio-economic obstacles due to the economic-capitalist crisis. Within the network various social forces and freelancers joined voluntarily by providing free services (e.g. doctors, teachers, lawyers etc).

The Network is coordinated by an Administrative Committee and is offering services in eight basic domains: Information-Guidance-Psychosocial Center, Educational Assistance (free courses to students), Financial Guidance Center (Counselors for dealing with issues such as debts etc), Medical Services, Center of Guidance to unemployed people, Legal Assistance (free legal advices), Provision of clothing and Entertainment Center for the youth (involving young people in cultural and sporting associations and events). Any person is able to come in contact with the Network and ask relevant assistance in the above domains and the personnel of the Network is responding accordingly.
