Only a strong AKEL can stand up to the DISY-DIKO-ELAM alliance that is in the making
Statement by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Giorgos Koukoumas
12 May 2026, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia
Three days after the interviews given by DISY President Annita Dimitriou and DIKO leading official Chrysis Pantelides, which opened the door to cooperation between DISY-DIKO and far-right ELAM, the two parties have been hiding from citizens.
This development marks a pivotal moment in the country’s political landscape, which is precisely why AKEL is once again posing the following question to the leaderships of DISY and DIKO:
Are they willing to cooperate — now in an official capacity — with ELAM, the neo-Nazi group as they themselves had characterized it up until recently?
Have they not realized that the preferential support they have rendered to ELAM for so many years has led to its mass growth?
One wonders, don’t they see that even the Greek government and the Greek Presidency themselves realize that the branch of a criminal organization must be isolated?
Or is ELAM perhaps the useful reserve force for DISY and DIKO in the elections for the Presidency of the Republic and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, but also in close votes in Parliament?
The Cypriot people — who have suffered from the crimes committed by the far right in this country — have a right to know. The Cypriot people — who see the far right poisoning society with hatred — have a right to know.
One thing is certain: AKEL – Left – Social Alliance is the strong force capable of standing up to the DISY-DIKO-ELAM alliance currently in the making. It is the force that can thwart their plans and halt their momentum. May 24 is a critical moment for democracy in our country.
