AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Stefanos Stefanou on the “golden passports” scheme

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 22nd December 2020, Nicosia

President Anastasiades insists on propagating the theory that he is innocent and blameless, stating that he will resign if his involvement in the “golden” passport scandal is proved. However, the conflict of interest concerning President Anastasiades and the members of the Ministerial Council doesn’t need to be investigated for it to be proved. It is self-evident and glaringly obvious.

The Anastasiades government, which took office in 2013, changed the criteria to suit the issuing by exception of citizenships/passports. Anastasiades’ law firm and law firms connected to the members of the Anastasiades government subsequently submitted hundreds of applications for citizenship. In fact the very same people, as the Ministerial Council, approved the relevant applications submitted.

However, Mr. Anastasiades insists that there is no problem with all this. He also insists that it is moral and legitimate for him and his family to accept offers private jet travel donations to the Seychelles from foreign business tycoons and for him to issue passports to them and their families.

In a country governed by the rule of law, what the Anastasiades government is doing would constitute a reason for political responsibility to be assumed. Obviously, one rule applies for the government ruling forces and another for everybody else.

In truth, how low do the government ruling forces think of people’s intelligence?
