On the occasion of the 92nd birthday of the great Greek music composer Mikis Theodorakis, the General Secretary of the C.C. of AKEL, sent him the following congratulatory letter.
“Comrade Mikis Theodorakis,
On the occasion of your birthday, the Central Committee of AKEL, the militants and members of the Party and myself personally, we wholeheartedly wish that you will always be in good health, strong and in the frontline of struggle.
The struggles of the Greek and Cypriot people, as well as of other peoples too, would not have had the same tone and enthusiasm if they weren’t inspired by your emotive and stirring work.
Humanity is going through difficult times. The hunt to secure fast and easy enrichment and profitability, which constitute the very essence of capitalism, has spread everywhere. Imperialist wars are continuing, while destitution and poverty are plaguing entire countries. Human lives are being lost in the Mediterranean and elsewhere in the effort of hundreds of thousands of refugees to seek a better and secure life.
In these conditions, your history, struggles and work are a source of inspiration and struggle, a shining beacon and compass in the struggle of the peoples for a better future.
On behalf of AKEL and the Cypriot people, we thank you for what you have created and for what you have offered to humanity. For us, you are not just the great music composer, lyricist, political activist and thinker, but above all a great friend of Cyprus.
