OKYPY’s responsibilities for the situation in hospitals are enormous

Statement by the General Secretary of AKEL A.Kyprianou on the situation in public hospitals

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 9th April 2020, Nicosia

We are following with great concern what is going on in our hospitals. The responsibilities which the state health services organisation (OKYPY) has to ensure personal protective equipment for healthcare workers and doctors are enormous. It also bears enormous responsibilities for the upheaval that has been provoked among healthcare workers and doctors in relation to the latest circular circulated about cutting their salaries.

We address a strong appeal first and foremost to the Minister of Health. He should intervene decisively and effectively to ensure the effective operation of OKYPY. We appeal to OKYPY to stop any confrontations with healthcare workers and doctors, to take all the necessary measures so that all healthcare workers and doctors without exception have all the protective personal equipment they need. And if this equipment does exist, as it claimed, it must be safeguarded that this equipment will go to healthcare workers and doctors and not locked up in various warehouses.

This is the practical support that must be provided to health care workers and doctors and not just mere expressions of verbal thanks for the important role they are playing. They are the people who will protect us from the pandemic and help us overcome it. We need to arm them so that they can be more effective in carrying out their duties. So let’s give them the essentials.
