Yes, it is tragic. The Party and government of scandals are leading in the polls for the upcoming elections. If corruption and interwoven interests are at the forefront of the public debate today, it is precisely because the government and the ruling DISY party are playing a leading role in cases with a moral deficit. What else must be done in this country?
From the haircut on the bank deposits and the protection of the millions of relatives to the Cooperative Bank sell-off scandal and the predatory management of the ‘golden’ passports scandal, the Anastasiades-DISY government has become the champion in lying and interwoven interests with an unprecedented regime-type mentality. It is dangerous for society, democracy and our country’s future. It is discredited in Europe and considered untrustworthy in the international community.
The blows dealt are constant. The EU is chasing Cyprus to take it to court, while the UN Secretary General Guterres considers Anastasiades as untrustworthy. The from time to time bravado and sloganeering do not save us from partition. Half a Cyprus, “pure and Greek”, a free market for the protagonists of interwoven interests – is that what they want?
That’s what we will end up with ultimately, together with many dangers for our children.
And with a fascist ELAM party marching on born and product of the policies of the Right. The descendants of Grivas and EOKA B are returning under the theatrical guise of democratic legitimacy. The brothers of the murderers of the “Golden Dawn” party. The generation of those who were defeated in 1945. Ruling DISY is the only one to gain, which uses ELAM as a reserve in the Presidency’s difficult moments and to pass the state budget. Blood is thicker than water…
Yes, the situation is, indeed, tragic. The President is now taking an active part in the election campaign, advertising his “achievements” like a sad old-fashioned party boss to save his party. This is his concern. Again by making false promises and issuing petty rhetoric. It is no coincidence that the phrase “I pledge to” during this government has become the shortest joke in the country’s political history.
This time, however, he mustn’t find a willing audience. This time he must be given a clear message – a deafening omen: we must finally rid ourselves from your administration…
The answer can and must come from the Left, not from any self-appointed saviors and rising political stars. Anastasiades has secured their support. The answer can and must come from every democrat, sensitive person who correctly weighs what’s at stake.
But how is it possible for AKEL and the Left not to become a strong protagonist in the face of this onslaught of the right-wing government?
Now is the time!
With courage, boldness and determination. All else – mistakes, weaknesses and omissions, can wait. We’ll talk about them when the time is right. Personal bitterness must be put to one aside. We shouldn’t lose sight of the substance. We mustn’t kill the hope.
People must take into account the honored history of AKEL, a steadfast legacy for the present and the future. AKEL is a dependable trustworthy pillar of support for the poor, a defender of democracy and a consistent patriotic force.
Yesterday and today, but also to ensure our future…
