No one is above the law and Constitution no matter what position he/she may hold

Statement by Aristos Damianou, AKEL Political Bureau member and MP after the session of the Parliamentary Committee on Institutions

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 25 April 2018, Nicosia

The Office of the Commissioner for Administration and Protection of Human Rights (Ombudsman), with all its departments, has a significant role to play in the Cypriot state and Cypriot society in general. Without degrading the work done over time and the challenges and difficulties facing this Office, unfortunately, we consider that we have a long way to go with regards the protection of human rights in particular. One issue which is being discussed in the House of Representatives Committee on Institutions, Merit and the Commissioner for Administration (Ombudsman) is the recent condemnable statements made by the Archbishop, who, in his public discourse, emitted rhetoric of hate against homosexuals, immigrants and numerous other groups of the population. Consequently, we believe that institutions must defend human rights and be at the forefront in judging everyone. No one is above the law and the Constitution, no matter position he/she may hold in this state and society.
