NATO-US defense of Turkey’s action a provocation

Statement of Georgos Loucaides, AKEL C.C. Spokesperson

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 25th November 2015, Nicosia

British jets reach Iraq as al-Qaeda-linked group threatens attack...epa04421798 A handout image made available by the British Ministry of Defence (MOD) on 28 September 2014 shows a RAF Tornado GR4 in flight over an unspecified territory, on 27 September 2014. Two Tornado GR4 bombers supported by an air-to-air refuelling aircraft took off at 0730 GMT 27 September from RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus. On 26 September, British lawmakers voted overwhelmingly in favour of joining the US-led aerial campaign in Iraq, where the Islamic State has seized large chunks of territory since June. Turkey’s action yesterday to shoot down a Russian aircraft represents a provocation against international peace and security. The full defense of Turkey’s action however given by NATO and the US, who even declared their solidarity with Turkey, is also a provocation. In other words, Turkey is playing a role of destroying peace in the eastern Mediterranean and NATO is applauding it.

At the same, none of them seem to consider the “Islamic State” as the principal enemy On the contrary, all the signs confirm that Turkey continues to support the “Islamic State” organization with its NATO and Western allies still appeasing Turkey, at the same time as they are apparently declaring war on the “Islamic State”.

In any case, the most important thing right now is to prevent the escalation of tension which will have unforeseen and dangerous consequences for the peoples of the region. AKEL reaffirms that to the drums of war which NATO and Turkey are beating, the answer must be all the peoples of our region raising a powerful voice for peace.
