Moving ceremony to honor AKEL veterans held yesterday in Limassol

In a moving ceremony held yesterday in Limassol, AKEL honored veterans from the district who have completed 50 years of continuous party life and action in the ranks of the Party.
Those awarded became members of AKEL in 1976, shortly after the tragic events of 1974 – the treacherous coup by the Athens junta and EOKA B and the Turkish invasion. It was a very difficult period for Cyprus. Many refugees from Famagusta, Kyrenia, Morphou, and other parts of occupied Cyprus found refuge in Limassol at that time. And many of them, while fighting for their own survival and that of their families, chose to join the ranks of AKEL to serve Cyprus, its workers, and ordinary people. This is reflected in the 47 comrades awarded, who include both refugees and non-displaced people.
Addressing the awarded comrades, the General Secretary of AKEL stressed that “You, too, who today have already pinned the Medal for 50 years of party life on your lapels, are bearers of the glorious, heroic, selfless and creative struggle of AKEL, like others before you and like others who will follow. That is precisely why, every time we take stock of our hundred-year history, we feel the heavy responsibility we have to pass on to the next generation an AKEL that is just as strong, just as powerful, just as effective. And I assure you that we will do so.
The battle we have to wage on May 24 in the parliamentary elections is a milestone in the reconstruction of this continuous, uninterrupted struggle. Our goal is to emerge even stronger from these elections. To make the voice of society even stronger in Parliament. And we will emerge even stronger.”
Today, March 11, 2026, at 6:30 p.m., at the “Palia Ilectriki” Cultural Centre, AKEL veterans from Paphos who have completed 50 years of continuous party life and action in the Party will be honored in a special ceremony.
