Migration tragedy result of neoliberal development and imperialist interventions

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 22nd April 2015, Nicosia

migrants intIn 2014 the number of dead immigrants in the wider Mediterranean region alone amounted to 3,279. In 2015 the number has already risen to 1,754 and the International Organization for Migration estimates in comparison to corresponding periods, that in 2015 the number of deaths may reach 30,000.

The mass of refugees and immigrants is the result of the global economic policies pursued. These people in their countries are confronted with economic misery, hunger and death. This whole situation is the result of the neoliberal model of development that was imposed on the countries of the “periphery”, long before it was imposed on the countries of the “centre”.

At the same time, hundreds of thousands are being displaced either due to the on-going imperialist military interventions, or the civil wars fueled by fierce competition for the exploitation of natural resources deposits and their routes to the developed West.

AKEL joins its voice with the voices of all people around the world that are in anger and struggling to stop this inhumane situation. We demand the government promotes policies at both national and European level that will address all aspects of the migration issue, on the basis of human rights and of International and European law.

Tomorrow an Extraordinary EU Summit will take place in Brussels, to discuss migration issues. On same day, at 18:00 pm the class trade union movement of PEO will organize a meeting outside the Office of the European Union to denounce the policies that are driving people to migration and death.

AKEL calls for a mass participation in the event so as to convey the message to Brussels that a change of course and policies is imperative.
