MESSAGE OF CONDOLENCE OF THE CENTRAL COMMITTEE OF AKEL TO THE VICE-PRESIDENT OF THE GOVERNMENT OF THE BOLIVARIAN REPUBLIC OF VENEZUELA NICOLAS MADURO

Press Statement of the C.C. of AKEL, 6th March 2013, Nicosia

The Central Committee of AKEL sends its condolences to the Vice-President of the Government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela Nicola Maduro and the people of the country after the death of President Hugo Chavez. The C.C. of AKEL shares the grief of the country and the family of Hugo Chavez.

The loss of a genuine revolutionary leader is not only a loss to Venezuela but to the whole of Latin America, for the real independence and prosperity which President Chavez struggled for. With Simon Bolivar, the liberator and leader of the independence of Latin America, as his example, President Chavez with the support of the people of his country and the progressive radical coalition of parties that backed his policies, among them the Communist Party of Venezuela, struggled to gain the sovereignty of the state in all areas. The government of Hugo Chavez promoted radical reforms which saw unemployment, poverty and illiteracy drastically reduced, establishing health and education as a social good, whilst it provided practical support to other countries in Latin America through the strengthening of Latin American cooperation. The policy and the work of Chavez is living proof that patriotism means first confrontation with the imperialist shackles and subsequently a struggle for people’s prosperity.

His democratic election in 1999 to the country´s highest state office led the enemies Venezuela to elaborate plans and coup attempts from 2002 to 2004 which were repelled by the people first and foremost, due to the love that ordinary people harbored for Chavez and his vision. It is no coincidence that despite the war and attacks he came under from the domestic and international plutocracy, from the U.S, President Chávez was re-elected President for a fourth term winning the elections of October 2012.

The Central Committee of AKEL expresses the hope that the people of Venezuela will safeguard the gains that have been achieved for its benefit over the last fifteen years if they remain united in purpose and with faith and dedication to the vision that it is already implementing. The upcoming elections will be decisive for the future of the Bolivarian Revolution.
