A meeting was took place today between AKEL and the leadership of the Turkish Cypriot movement ‘Sol Hareket’ (Left Movement) at the offices of the Central Committee of AKEL.

During the meeting, current political developments in both communities were discussed, with particular emphasis on the Cyprus problem. Also discussed were Turkey’s interventions in the internal affairs of the Turkish Cypriot community, as well as the current economic and social deadlocks in the daily life of Turkish Cypriots.

As far as the Cyprus problem is concerned, the two parties agreed that any positions outside the agreed framework of the solution [of the Cyprus problem] must be abandoned, especially the unacceptable two state position. The two communities must return to a sincere inter-community dialogue on the basis of the agreed framework for a solution and the convergence that have been agreed up to 2017.

Furthermore, the two parties agreed that the progressive forces in both communities have a key role to play in achieving the goal of a solution. In this direction, AKEL and Sol Hareket agreed to work on joint initiatives and actions in the period ahead.
