Local Government at the service of society

The Central Committee of AKEL convened today and discussed the Party’s political framework for the 2024 local government elections.

For AKEL, these elections are of essential importance. Local Self-Government is the principal institution of power that is closest to citizens and society in general. The people, the orientation and action programmes in Municipal and Community Councils are always of decisive importance for the quality of life and everyday life of local communities. Even more so now, with the Reform and the new Local Government Charter, the possibilities and perspectives of Municipal Councils to promote projects and actions for the benefit of local communities are enhanced.

The Left has a great tradition, made a huge contribution and activity in local government.

With historical personalities who, since the 1940’s, founded the progressive pro-people’s conception of local government with their pioneering work.

With the Groups of the Left in Municipal and Community Councils that every day in all the towns and villages of Cyprus are developing actions to assert and promote proposals for a Local Government with democratic participation.

With people who are capable, honest and active in the daily life of their local communities and who bring tangible results for their Municipalities and Communities.

With the decisive and creative role of the Left and its activists in promoting the reform of local government.

The Local Government elections, just like the European elections, will be held in the new political environment that has evolved after the Presidential Elections. AKEL considers that it has a duty to make use of its own forces, but also to proceed to the forging of cooperation based on principles with forces and personalities beyond our Party in order to offer a choice to the entire progressive spectrum of Cypriot society.

Our aim is to formulate ballot lists that will embrace and be embraced by the entire progressive spectrum of our country. With people determined to contribute with their knowledge and creativity to local communities, making the most of the possibilities offered by the new framework of local government. To implement development programmes that respond to local

 

needs and always with a modern, social and ecological approach. Our ambition is to present before the Cypriot people ballot lists with a strong presence of the young generation and with gender balance.

The Central Committee of AKEL today gave the impetus for AKEL’s District and local committees to proceed with the necessary political and organisational processes for initiating a dialogue with local communities, the formation of cooperation/alliances and the drawing up of ballot lists as soon as possible.
