Letter of Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to the General Secretary of the C.C. of AKEL Andros Kyprianou

The Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation Sergey Lavrov has sent a letter to the General Secretary of the C.C. of AKEL Andros Kyprianou, with which he expresses his appreciation to AKEL for the initiative it took to submit to the House of Representatives of the Republic of Cyprus a Resolution “On the 75th anniversary of the Antifascist Victory of the Peoples”.
The letter states:
“In Russia, we especially hold in high regard the initiative which you and the Progressive Party of the Working People (AKEL) took to promote the preparation of the resolution “On the 75th anniversary of the Anti-Fascist Victory of the Peoples”, which was approved by the House of Representatives on 22nd May 2020.
It remains an indisputable fact that the Allied Powers, with the fighters of the Resistance in the occupied territories, side by side, annihilated Nazism. The attempts to distort the history of World War II are unacceptable and insulting the memory of those who sacrificed their lives for the Great Victory. Without this enormous price that the Soviet Union paid in this titanic struggle, it would not have been possible to crush the Hitlerite regime.
Only the respect for history, which is passed down from generation to generation, can be the sure guarantee against new global conflicts, contribute to the consolidation of peace, mutual understanding and trust between countries and peoples.
I reaffirm our solidarity with you on the defence of historical truth and I congratulate you on the anniversary of the Victory.”
