Letter from AKEL Parliamentary Representative G. Loucaides to the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports and Youth

AKEL supports call for bigger participation of Cypriot cultural creators in the ‘Cypria’ International Festival

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 23rd April 2021, Nicosia

The Parliamentary Representative of AKEL, Giorgos Loucaides, today sent a letter to the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports and Youth, calling on the competent Ministry to consider the possibility of including more works of art by Cypriot cultural creators in the ‘Cypria’ International Festival, and by doing so putting the emphasis on the utilization and support of Cypriot cultural creation.

The letter follows:

“As AKEL, we have proposed that those employed in the field of Culture should be supported substantially, so that they can confront the painful effects caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. From the very beginning of the pandemic, AKEL called on the government to elaborate and implement a new action plan, putting the emphasis on making use of and supporting Cypriot cultural creation. Among other things, we supported the demand that a bigger number of Cypriot creators and contributors should be included and supported in the institutional events organised by your Ministry.

Despite that, I have received recently complaints by Cypriot artists/creators, as well as cultural agencies/organizations, that a large number of proposals have been rejected which sought their participation in the program of the “Cypria” International Festival, causing great disappointment to those who submitted the relevant proposals.

Without in any way questioning the correctness of the choices that have been made, I call on you to seriously consider increasing the number of productions at the “Cypria” Festival, giving the possibility to more Cypriot artists and institutions to take part in the Festival.”
