Its inadmissible for a modern democratic state is for state bodies and institutions and political forces to demand investigations, prosecutions and the silencing of artists for their work

Statement by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Stefanos Stefanou on disciplinary proceedings against the Art teacher Gabriel

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 18th September 2020, Nicosia

The Anastasiades-DISY Government and the Ministry of Education must give an answer as to whether or not they will continue any investigation or disciplinary proceedings against the Art teacher Yiorgos Gabriel in relation to his works which, by the way, he created outside of educational and professional time. The disciplinary procedure activated by the Ministry of Education against the artist-teacher must be withdrawn immediately.

AKEL reiterates that criticism of any works of art, about the content of their messages and their aesthetic and artistic value is absolutely free. What is inadmissible for a modern democratic state is for state bodies and institutions and political forces to demand investigations, prosecutions and the silencing of artists for their work.
