How prepared is Cyprus for the upcoming fire season?

20 March 2026, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

AKEL expresses its profound concern regarding Cyprus’ preparedness for the new fire season, following the tragic events of last summer that claimed human lives and destroyed large swathes of our natural environment.

Despite the government’s assurances regarding the adequacy of resources and its reference to a total number of aircraft that “will be at the country’s disposal,” the reality remains uncertain, and the country runs the risk of repeating last year’s mistakes.

AKEL stresses that citizens and local communities cannot continue to face the prospect of yet another summer with uncertain protection against wildfires. The protection of life, property, and the natural environment demands serious planning.

Outstanding issues and shortages in aerial firefighting resources must be addressed immediately. It must be ensured that the agreed-upon aerial firefighting resources will arrive in Cyprus on time, with binding deadlines and procedures that will not be subject to last-minute legal challenges.

Civil protection and prevention must be strengthened overall through the elaboration and implementation of substantive plans, proactive monitoring, and effective coordination of all government agencies. Prevention, proper planning, and full operational readiness are critical to protecting people’s lives, property, and the natural environment.
