How much empty talk have they fed our people? – Article by Kostas Koukos, member of the AKEL Lefkosia-Kerynia District Committee

Saturday 5 November 2022, “Haravgi” newspaper

We live in the era of paradoxes and absolute amnesia of the masses.

For years now, an operation has been underway to disillusion the people and falsify the historical truth. Black becomes white, slowly and gradually erasing from the collective memory of the people a series of crimes that have been committed against our homeland.

The perpetrators have become victims and traitors heroes. Perpetrators who indeed are provocatively adding insult to injury. When scandals and scams are revealed, when the stench of rot and corruption becomes unbearable, the protagonists and the guilty become accusers who blame us, the victims. The system has managed to penetrate so deeply into the subconscious of the masses that it really does seem that so many people are walking around as sleepwalkers to the extent that they no longer distinguish the self-evident.

Through machinations and scheming, the presidential candidate Nikos Christodoulides was dubbed ‘independent’, while he never misses a single moment of repeating that he is and will be a DISY member and even feels proud to have served the most corrupt government as one of its key protagonists.

At the same time, in all the public opinion polls, more than 70% respond that this government should go home, but at the same time many of them say they are ready to vote for Christodoulides to lead the “change”.

The leader of this erroneous administration, who rules without any inhibitions, claims that he is leaving office quietly and proudly, because he is handing over a stronger economy and country than the one he inherited.

While this narrative is evidently an enormous lie, an intolerable provocation, apathy prevails.

The so-called leaders of the democratic patriotic forces, once again, under the cloak of supposed opposition, are fighting to keep DISY in power.

Last week in the Parliamentary Finance Committee, these leaders voted in favour of releasing the funds [in the government’s state budget] for the Grivas Museum! They even participated in the disinformation campaign and declared like some innocent child that they did not vote for this particular museum, but for the one in Chloraka!

They are the same political leaders who will attend the events condemning the coup d’état, praise Makarios and recount scenes from our people’s resistance against EOKA B.

They are the same people who will dare to lay wreaths at the commemorative events in honor of the resistance fighters murdered by Grivas’ EOKA B organisation in Lazania and Fikardou.

As thankfully we are not all sleepwalking and have still not abandoned reason, nor has our memory faded, and because we are not all the same, we will fight with more tenacity to change things, we will fight until the time we send to the sidelines all those adventurers who feed the people with empty talk and contribute to the amnesia of an entire people.
