Households and businesses cannot take on the burden of the country’s energy inefficiency

27 March 2024, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

Society will be suffering as a result of the Christodoulides government’s sloppy and hasty decision to end fuel subsidies.

The government is announcing with great ease the termination of the support measures, but when it comes to taking measures, it employs its vague clichéd sound bite “we are looking into it”.

The same is true of the need for compensatory measures to offset the implementation of the new “green” taxes that the government wants to impose at a time when the issue is still under consultation in Europe.

Households and businesses cannot be saddled with the country’s energy inefficiency because of the previous government’s criminal omissions.

Consumers need substantial and comprehensive support with a long-term plan and the implementation of immediate measures such as the following:

  • the continuation of the existing measures,
  • the reduction of VAT on electricity from 19% to 9%; and
  • the taxation of exorbitant profits in the energy sector and of the banks in order to provide support to society.
