Hearing “Cyprus and Energy: Peace and prosperity in the region”
25th of February 2015
AKEL co-organised with GUE/NGL a Hearing under the title “Cyprus and Energy: Peace and prosperity in the region” at the European Parliament headquarters in Brussels. The main speakers at the event were:
Andros Kyprianou, Secretary General of C.C AKEL, Cyprus
Ali Gule, former President of DEV-IS
Dr. Charles Ellinas, former CEO of KRETYK
Talks for the solution of the Cyprus problem have been suspended since October 2014 following Turkey’s violation of the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of the Republic of Cyprus in violation of the Law of the Seas, UNCLOS. The hydrocarbon reserves discovered in the sea bed of the Republic of Cyprus’ EEZ belong to Cyprus. Turkey has no right to challenge that. With the solution of the Cyprus problem both communities would benefit from the natural resources and hence energy – now a source of tension – could become a uniting factor for a peaceful and prosperous future for both Greek-Cypriots and Turkish-Cypriots. This would also have a positive influence in the region where recently discovered energy resources have become the cause of further external interventions and frictions.
