Hands off Syria!

AKEL backs tomorrow’s demonstration against the new Turkish invasion of Syria

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 11th October 2019, Nicosia

syrıa ıntAKEL calls for a mass participation in tomorrow’s mobilization organized by the Cyprus Peace Council to denounce Turkey’s new invasion of Syria. We call on the Cypriot people to unite its voice and express its solidarity with the people of the suffering neighboring country, to shout out loud “Hands off Syria!”

With the backing of NATO and the blessing of the US, together with Russia’s tolerance and the EU’s verbal belated statements, Turkey is invading Syria to once again spread more destruction, death and the uprooting of people. Turkey’s third consecutive invasion of Syria is just the latest episode in the foreign intervention launched eight years ago to overthrow the Syrian government and divide the country. This foreign intervention began when the US, NATO, Turkey, EU member states and the Gulf monarchies armed and funded the so-called Syrian opposition, which essentially became the breeding ground for the consolidation of the murderous hordes of jihadists and IS itself.

The Erdogan government has played an extremely dirty role with a direct and immediate interconnection, strengthening and funding IS. However, Russia’s involvement on the side of the Syrian government and the heroic resistance of the Kurds of northern Syria against IS forced a change in the original plans. Today, a compromise is being sought between the foreign forces that have become involved in the war, pointing to a possible fragmentation of the country into three. A country has been destroyed and a people massacred and uprooted to bring about a new division of the region, with the danger of a IS reappearing dynamically.

The EU’s responsibilities are enormous as well because all through the previous years it backed the plan to overthrow the Syrian government, permitted with its decisions the strengthening and arming of anti-government forces, whilst it is still continuing to give in to Erdogan’s blackmail on the refugee issue.

Tomorrow’s CPC demonstration, Saturday 12th October will take place 10:00 am at the square at the opening of Ledra Street in Nicosia, we shall demand an end to the war, to the foreign interventions and the bloodshed. We demand respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria. We shall express our practical solidarity with the Syrian people and their desire for peace.
