Government’s selective sensitivity on institutions exposed again

Statement of Georgos Loucaides, AKEL C.C. Spokesperson

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 14th December 2015, Nicosia

Proedriko The relevant decision of the Ministerial Council to degrade the Auditor General of the Republic is another link in the chain of actions by the Anastasiades-DISY government that bring it into direct conflict with the “Excellent of the Excellent”, which the government has chosen to appoint as heads of leading independent institutions of the country. We note that not a week has gone by since President Anastasiades declared his full support towards the Auditor General and invited him to be uncompromising in the exercise of his duties.

Of course, as we have always stressed, no institution is above criticism. Moreover, neither are the persons who serve them beyond reproach, nor their particular positions or decisions. However although up until recently the leadership and government of DISY party were cursing and anathematizing any criticism of independent institutions and officials, they have now managed to clash with almost with all of them and indeed with unprecedented fierceness.

This selective sensitivity of the government and ruling forces cannot but be attributed to the serious discomfort whenever positions, statements and actions of government/state officials are not fully in harmony with the government’s given objectives and expediencies. Could it be that for the government and ruling forces the narrative that “we are always right” applies?
