Government “success story”: 1 in 3 young people want to emigrate

Statement of Haris Polycarpou, member of the Economic Research Department of the C.C. of AKEL

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 16th October 2015, Nicosia

unemployment 4 econA country’s economy is not just numbers and indicators, but also its human resources. The recent research conducted by the Cyprus Institute of Statisticians (KIS), according to which one in three young people want to emigrate abroad to find work, anything but confirms the “success story” propagated by the leadership and Government of the DISY Rally party for Cyprus.

Nevertheless, the government remains dogmatically faithful to implementing its austerity policy: the policy that over the last two years has resulted in over 30,000 Cypriots searching for work abroad. This is the policy that takes away the perspective for thousands of young people, given that jobs in Cyprus have been significantly reduced.

This is the reason why the Government instead of aiming solely to receive praise from its Troika partners must first and foremost give a real perspective to the young generation and offer practical support to society.
