The Government must state its position immediately on DISY President’s statements on Palestinian problem

Written Statement of Georgos Loucaides, AKEL C.C. Spokesperson

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 31st January 2016, Nicosia

 Palestinian Ambassador

palestine interRecently we have been witnesses to the unacceptable positions expressed by the President of the governing DISY party on the Palestinian problem, which have nothing to do whatsoever with Cyprus’ long-standing and steadfast positions on the Palestinian problem; statements, through which the perpetrator has been presented as the being the victim, completely ignoring the flagrant violation of International Law and human rights of the Palestinian people, with all the repercussions this entails for Cyprus.

These unacceptable statements have anything but gone unnoticed among the Palestinians and the Arab world in general. The letter from the former Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Palestine Nabil Shaath, which was published in the “Fileleftheros” newspaper and the relevant letter from the Ambassador of the State of Palestine to Cyprus addressed to the General Secretary of the C.C. of AKEL, that was sent after AKEL’s reaction to the statements issued by DISY President Neophytou and which are attached, are indicative of the damage that Mr. Neophytou’s statements have caused.

We urge the government to take a stand immediately with regards Averof Neophytou’s statements and to clarify whether or not it adopts their content. A possible continuation of the silence and refraining from taking a position on the issue objectively will be seen as government support and acceptance of the positions of President of the DISY Rally party.

Correspondingly, the meeting of the Heads or representatives of the political parties must deal in general with the issue of Neophytou’s visit to Israel, which the members of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the House of Representatives were informed about by the DISY Press Spokesperson. In particular, however, it must examine the exploitation of the position of President of the Foreign Affairs Committee by Mr. Neophytou to project extreme party positions; positions which have put the House of Representatives, but also Cyprus in danger.
