Government migrant policy non-existent

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 21 June 2018, Nicosia

The Migration Policy Bureau of the C.C. of AKEL and a delegation from the class-based trade unions of PEO, EDON Youth and POGO Woman’s organization on the occasion of World Refugee Day on 20 June yesterday organized a Festival at the Reception and Accommodation Centre for asylum seekers at Kofinou.

The Cultural Artists Sectoral Branch of SIDIKEK PEO Trade Union also participated in the Festival, which organized an artistic entertainment program for children.

The delegation of organizations had the opportunity to see and hear at first hand, from both the refugees themselves, as well as from the relevant service, the problems refugees are facing.

During the festival, basic necessities and essentials for adults and infants were delivered.

Our efforts and solidarity do not end here. With more militancy, we will demand from the government that it takes practical steps to resolve the multiple problems that exist, principally due to the lack of an immigration policy. At the same time, we will continue to unite our voice with the international movement struggling to eliminate the root causes of ongoing wars, the uprooting of the peoples and migration, demanding the implementation of measures to provide support for refugees in host countries through a human-centred approach based on solidarity.
