Government is putting more pressure on working people’s rights

Statement by AKEL-Left-New Forces Parliamentary Representative Yiorgos Loucaides

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 12 February 2019, Nicosia

Yesterday’s figures released by the Statistical Service illustrate the absence of an overall action plan in relation to public service personnel. While there is a significant reduction in the number of permanent staff in all categories, at the same time a significant increase has been registered in temporary staff in order to cover the additional needs that arise.

Apart from the problems that arise in relation to the procedures and the lack of transparency in the hiring of temporary/casual employees, the government is putting into practice its labour-related policy. It is clear that in their own mind both the private and the public sectors must move from permanent to flexible forms of employment, putting at the same time even more pressure on the rights of all working people.
