Government focused on serving big private interests

Statement of Georgos Loucaides, AKEL Press Spokesperson

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 23rd October 2015, Nicosia

econ privatisationsThe Minister of Finance in his statements today to Politis newspaper assures that there are thousands of job vacancies in the public services, a sufficient number to be able to absorb workers who will be forced to move from the profitable Semi-governmental organizations when the Anastasiades-DISY government will hand them over to big private interests.

These public statements made by Minister of Finance Charis Georgiades understandably provoke a series of questions about the positions and handling of the leadership and government of DISY party.

– If there are such great needs for the recruitment of thousands to the Public Service then why isn’t the government immediately proceeding to cover them from the endless list of the unemployed so that this huge social scourge is alleviated?

– How can the government and ruling forces be certain that there will be corresponding jobs, with the same duties and job description plans, for those workers in the Semi-governmental organizations who will be forced to move on to be absorbed into the public sector?

– Or is the government – for the sake of serving the interests of private investors – not interested if the “well paid public employees” – as it denigratingly tends to call them – will be paid by taxpayers without them even needed to work?

– Finally, have all these aphorisms about the “wasteful state” and overstaffed employees in the public sector suddenly been forgotten, solely for the government and ruling forces to ensure more profits for the private investor, paving the way for the hiring of a cheap labour force on humiliating terms of employment?

– How much consistency is characteristic of the Anastasiades-DISY government when it denounces even the payment of a single cent of state assistance to a public body, while at the same time it has no hesitation in handing out tens of millions of euros of taxpayer’s money to big private interests, so they can make even bigger profits?

It is evident that, apart from the fact that the government and ruling forces are unwavering in their inconsistency and contradictions, they are also steadfast on another thing as well, which we must acknowledge. They are dogmatically fixed and obsessed in their efforts to serve big private interests and the privileged few at the expense of the many, those less or not privileged at all.
