Government-DISY priority is to serve the profits of the privileged few
Statement of Charis Polycarpou, member of the C.C. of AKEL
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 29th January 2016, Nicosia
Since the Government is continuing to present privatizations as the only way for the Cyprus economy to achieve growth, AKEL recalls:
- It is Mr. Anastasiades who during the presidential pre-election campaign sent personal written pledges to the working people employed in the Semi-governmental organizations stating he would not proceed to any privatizations.
- It is the DISY party Government through its actions and decisions that has in the end forced Cyprus on the path of privatizations.
- The position of the current Government and of DISY party that privatizations should be implemented regardless of the Memorandum is long-standing. Their priority is not to serve the interests of the society, but the profits of the privileged few.
- In the case of the Semi-governmental Cyprus Electricity Authority (CYTA) they want to sell off a profitable organization for next to nothing; a Semi-governmental organization that has supported and can continue to support the growth and development of the Cyprus economy.
For AKEL the protection of public wealth and assets is a non-negotiable principle and doesn’t change according to pre-election considerations.
We will continue to struggle for the safeguarding of the social character, modernization and qualative improvement of the public utility organizations.
