Government appointments signal the beginning of the presidential campaign

Statement by Eleni Mavrou, member of the Political Bureau of the C.C. of AKEL and AKEL MP

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 28th January 2017, Nicosia

cc AKEL ezekiaAfter the appointment of Sophie Michailidou, member of the Political Bureau and the Director of Communication of the governing DISY Democratic Rally to the post of Director of the Press and Information Office, according to press reports it is now the turn of Savias Orfanidou – also a member of the Political Bureau of the Democratic Rally party – with her appointment to the offices of the European Investment Bank in Luxembourg.

These appointments are a continuation of the government and ruling force’s attempts to control the banks and the cooperative movement through the appointment of their chosen and favoured ones.

The government ruling forces for three years, during hard times for most people, kept the sensitive areas of health, education, social welfare without the necessary personnel and staff.

Today, one year before this government’s mandate expires, it is proceeding to open up and fill positions that serves only cronyism and clientelism considerations, rather than the state’s operational needs.

It is obvious that the government and ruling forces signal the beginning of the campaign for the presidential elections, indifferent to any consequences for the country and people.
